…showed last 75 words of 410 total…the old man. When this doesn't resolve the problem (his paranoia), he confesses, thinking the policemen are hearing the heartbeat also and mocking him. His character is unchanging throughout the story since he's always mad. In conclusion, I think the narrator is indeed a madman, even though he repetitively tells us that he isn't. His actions throughout this tale, described above, prove him wrong. He is crazy although the story and convinces us about it.
