The League of Nations was the first established international organization to maintain world peace. It was founded in 1920 as part of the settlement that ended World War I. The League of Nations was first suggested in the Fourteen Points presented on Jan. 8, 1918, by Woodrow Wilson, who was at that time the president of the United States. After the peace negotiations opened, a commission headed by Wilson continued the work in a plan called The Covenant

America. After its failure to prevent one war, it was decided to create a new body to fulfill the League's role, but to take it further. This body was to be the United Nations. Many League bodies, like the International Labour Organization, continued to function and eventually became affiliated with the United Nations. At a meeting of the Assembly in 1946, the League ended and its services, mandates, and property were transferred to the United Nations.
