Aronofsky went out of his way to make the audience feel uncomfortable. The disturbing visuals and eerie sounds throughout the film create an extremely unsettling atmosphere. This is, however, refreshing as directors usually try their hardest to put their audience at ease and develop the story slowly for their enjoyment. Aronofsky kicked our sugarcoated expectations in the face and didn't patronise his audience by assuming we couldn't handle such a graphic depiction of addiction.
