There were also lots of figures of speech used: personification, 'disappointed shells' 'clumsy helmets', alliteration, 'sick of sin' 'Knock-kneed', similes, 'coughing like hags' 'bitter as cud', and metaphors, 'haunting flares' 'drunk with fatigue.'. These work as they spare no detail in the horror that this man saw. The metaphor 'disappointed shells' makes me think of the malevolence that it was launched with, that it was disappointed that it killed no-one.
