John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. He spent his childhood loving and appreciating the environment. He grew up with two older sisters and one younger sister. At age fourteen he made the decision to write, beginning then with stories and poems. Throughout the 1950s he traveled the world with Elaine, when his career and work seemed to suffer. But he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962, and after than he decided to stop writing fiction and resorted to journalism. Overall, Steinbeck was a very significant American writer and was also very popular worldwide.
