The American Dream has been the dream of many. In Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
the main character, Willy Loman, has become obsessed with achieving the American

His son Bernard goes a different path, achieving professional and financial success in law,
a field to which he's temperamentally and intellectually well-suited. Willy looks down on
both. Willy Loman is nonetheless, a man to be pitied. He loses his job because he can no
longer go on the road. Faced with no opportunity he'll take he commits suicide. Thus his
chance to realize the American Dream is ended.
