The breakdown of one's perception of his/her memories, surroundings, or identity is classified as a dissociative disorder. These disorders arise when a person is trying to avoid stress or anxiety and when their way of dealing with life problems has been threatened (Carson,p.280). A situation may have been too difficult for their normal coping mechanism. a person that suffers from one of these disorders has had a relative that has also suffered from the disorder. Little is known about the causes of these disorders other than the fact that severe stress and trauma have an integral part. Psychotherapy and
hypnosis are two ways of dealing with the disorder and help a person to regain memory. Recovery time varies for each disorder and is dependant on the severity of the case.
