In the beginning of the drama, Hamlet appears to be a courteous and thoughtful person, but as we intensify our reading and try to analyze Hamlet's character we come to the conclusion that he is not aware of being actually self-absorbed and ignorant to the fact that his actions can inflict pain on other people. Hamlets character changes noticeably in Act V of the drama, when he reveals

great pain for his friend Leartes. In apologizing and admitting his mistake he expresses feelings and displays interest in how Leartes feels. He is aware of the pain he inflicted and feels sorry. Hamlet's behavior demonstrates clearly that he has changed. Perhaps the death of Ophelia and Leartes dramatic jump in to the grave woke Hamlet up and made him realize through his new awareness that his actions have caused pain and hurt to others.
