the women were yearning to marry Tony. Also the women seem to have a rivalry between them to get Tony, there are more interested in beating each other than marrying Tony.
Tony is not the "arch deceiver" the title talks about, he is just someone who is looking for a wife. He allows himself to get into this situation because he is trying not trying not hurt the girl's feelings, he is just a romantic.
