lack of privacy that the people have in this world. The lack of privacy and comfort is uncomprehendable thing for the reader who lives in an over-indulgent western world, where invasion of privacy is a crime. But in this world being private can lead to execution and that is why Winston is so terrified because he still believes in the ways of our world and that is enough to be killed for in his world.
