James Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, but lived with his grandmother in Lawrence, Kansas, and subsequently more than half his life. His mother was a schoolteacher, she furthermore wrote poetry. His father, James Nathaniel Hughes, was a storekeeper.
