As you can see there are many symbols and hidden meanings dealing with civil rights. I believe that the whole story was about the civil rights movement and the struggle that blacks are going to have in trying to accomplish there goal. I think that Langston Hughes wrote this to get blacks to realize the struggle and not to give up.
