When the Founding Fathers came together they wanted to separate from Britain because their home country was imposing its will on them without any colonial representation in British legislatures. The genius of the Framers was not in the creation of a highly democratic document, but in their understanding of their political situation and designing an environment where, although often with great opposition, equality and democracy could grow. The Constitution, as originally written, was not a highly democratic document, instead it has proven to be a highly intelligent document meant to change over time. As American ideals have turned more democratic, so has the Constitution.
