The church became corrupt and this caused the Protestant Reformation to rise. Martin Luther a great leader began this reformation. He had only one purpose, to let everyone see that the church had become corrupt. His beliefs spread through many other great leaders. Including Philip Melanchthon. The Catholic Church tried to this Reformation but couldn't.
