Harlem Renaissance Between 1919 and 1926, large numbers of black Americans left their rural southern states homes to move to urban centers. This black urban migration combined with experimental trends and rise of a group of radical black intellectuals all contributed to the particular styles and unexpected success of black artists. It was through the Harlem Renaissance that some black artists were able to become the "New Negro," so to speak. In this manner, the artists were able to combat racial stereotypes, such as the "mammy" and "coon", and produce images of virtuous humane black folk in art, music, and writing.
