Vietnam had been a French colony, before World War II and after the Japanese were defeated and driven out, it went back to French control. But despite U.S. financial aid, France was driven out of the country in 1954 by communist forces led by a man named Ho Chi Minh. U.S. President Lyndon Johnson's decision not to seek reelection in 1968. Contacts between North Vietnam and the United States in Paris in 1968 were delayed into 1969 to include South Vietnam and the NLF.
On January 15,1973, President Nixon announced the suspension of all attacks in North Vietnam which was later followed by a withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam. The Paris Peace Accords were later signed on January 27, 1973 which officially ended US involvement in the Vietnam conflict
