It seems as if there are situations that are above the importance of chivalry. In this story death is a fear that seems to exceed chivalry. This scene is where we clearly see the author's viewpoint. When Gawain took the sash we immediately realize that the unknown author saw chivalry as beneficial, yet in extreme situations it is unattainable.
