Finny was able to provide companionship and advice to bring out the best in Gene. Moreover, Devon School put up a wall between the reality Gene hated facing and the experiences Gene went through as he matured. Good friends and a safe-feeling place are always needed for a separate peace away from the "real world" to be possible.
