Eliezer Wiesel was born on September 30, 1928. He grew up with his parents and his three sisters, Hilda, Bea, and Tzipora, in Sighet, a small town in Romania. While he was growing up everything around him was to do with family, religious studies, Community and God.

Near the end of the war in April 1945, the guards stopped feeding the prisoners and began to evacuate the camp, killing 10,000 prisoners a day.
On the morning of April 11, an underground movement rose from within the camp and attacked the SS guards. Later that evening, the first American tank stood in the gates of Buchenwald and liberated the camp.
After liberation, Elie became sick from food poisoning and spent several days in a hospital.
