because of their lack of knowledge, emotion, fear, and so on. In a way, they seem to lack free will and the motivation to accomplish successful lives on their own. The Martians have been proven to not fulfill a functionalist view in the sense that they lack the interaction and conflict between external input and internal mental states. Why not take advantage of a fortunate situation and make life a little easier along the way?
