In society today, people are guaranteed certain rights. These rights range from privacy to freedom of speech to choosing whom to love. The government doesn't really get too involved in the personal lives of the people it governs. Society takes these rights for granted. The society that George Orwell created in 1984 is one in which almost anyone who valued their civil liberties wouldn't be willing live in. That government seems to have complete control over so many aspects of its citizens' lives. The Party decides so many things for the people. The inhabitants of Oceania are given so little choice in how they live their lives. This makes the government in 1984 a ubiquitous presence in the people's lives.
