Westward Expansion The discovery of gold sent a number of emigrants towards the west. Poeple had many reasons for moving west. The west seemed to promise something new. The routes or trails were long and devastating for the travelers. One main problem was that the ytook over much ladn that Indians had occupied. The Government set up reservations for Indians but they refused to live there. These tribes engaged in a constant battle with non Indians, throughout the 1860s and 1870s. These INdians were cruelly and violently driven from their homes and sent to reservations in Oklahoma.
